For some people, this is a shameful Socialist Realism episode, others perceive it as a community of artists working together in a particular place, which was Sopot, while some consider it to be Colouristic Modernism of the 1950s. The "Sopot School" term is a controversial and dubious subject, especially considering the fact that members of this artistic circle chose diverse directions for their further development. "A view of the sea" is an exhibition dedicated to the maritime subject in the works of a group of artists deriving from the so-called "Sopot School" circle.

The National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk collects historical artefacts related to the maritime history. In the scope of the fine arts collection, from the start of its operation, one of the Museum's priorities has been creation of a collection of paintings by the former Dutch School in such a way as to present a synthetic overview of the main trends and achievements of the Dutch seascapists.

The collection of Polish maritime art of the National Maritime Museum has been enriched by the painting "Storm in the Port" by an eminent artist Mela Muter. Purchased due to the subsidy granted by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the painting will be exhibited at the Maritime Gallery.

The fact that a bond of marriage which unites two artists may have an inspirational influence on their artistic work has been proven by such couples as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as well as Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel. The National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk is pleased to invite its visitors to the exhibition of works created by an artistic couple of Władysława Rogińska and Bolesław Rogiński.

In the 19th century, yachting was a sport and a form of entertainment of the elite. Representatives of the aristocracy and high finance of that time were eager to invest in more and more modern vessels. Sailing was not only a hobby but it was also viewed as an opportunity to emphasize one's social status. The 19th century was also marked by the beginnings in the development of photography. A new device was invented for recording of the continuously changing reality, for presenting of events and displaying new trends, including yachting.

A scale model of a 17th century shipyard, the most valuable models of historic ships, original shipbuilding tools recovered from shipwrecks, 17th century paintings – these are some of the most important elements of a new permanent exhibition organized at the National Maritime Museum, displaying development of the European shipbuilding – from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Henryk Baranowski is a central figure of the 13th edition of the "Polish Artists and the Sea" cycle. Baranowski was a seascapist, a continuator of Antoni Suchanek and Marian Mokwa's tradition, as well as a commodore serving in the navy. Organized on the 10th anniversary of painter's death, this year's exhibition is an occasion to commemorate his individuality and artistic work.
